Clay Canyon Variscite is one of the most sought after varscites and highly regarded amongst mineral collectors and high-end jewelers alike. It was initially discovered in the 1890's but wasn't named the Little Green Monster mine until 1937. Over the next few years it was heavily explored and mined by Ed Over & Arthur Montgomery. They found a number of quite impressive nodules over their time collecting but as with most everything good, less and less was found until mining slowed and eventually came to a halt. Legal issues with claim patents, property owners & unauthorized collectors prevailed while the two maintained the many other facets of their lives. Evenutally, the mining area degraded and partially collapsed in some areas, making mining difficult. The site was bulldozed, reclaimed and the land sold years later. There are whispers of gem green varscite still in the ground.. but that, we may never know.
